THE PROBLEM
The EVO-4/9
transmissions feature a high pressure angle on 1st gear to keep the
gear from breaking but there is a trade-off. High pressure
angles equate to increased radial thrust loads and this will beat up
1st gear leaving indentations from the roller bearing that it rides
on. This will make all kinds of noise and as it wears out the gear it
no longer has enough support and it will crack like this.
THE SOLUTION
The solution is a HD bearing upgrade that replaces
the rollers with a solid roller/bushing that doubles the effective support area of 1st gear. This upgrade is what your
transmission will need if you are launching the piss out of your EVO.
